So why is photography so expensive?

I am often asked, "Why is a photographer for my wedding so expensive? After all, it's just taking pictures isn't it?" If only that were the case, my life would be so much simpler. Anyway, let me break this down visually for you...

So using a $1200, 5-hour session as an example, only $144, or 12%, of the total actually goes to doing the photography. And if I spend 5 hours taking the pictures, that works out to $28.80 an hour, and that doesn't even include travel time to and from the event. If you can live with that, and I can live with making $28.80 an hour for photographing your session, then we are all good.

Packages

My approach to packages and prices is very simple...you should understand exactly what it will cost, and exactly what you're getting. I don't try to "up-sell" anything, so when you choose one of the three wedding packages, I won't try to convince you that you need something else, because life is complicated enough as it is.

Just so you know up front...

  • I don't shoot video, or do drone coverage...sorry
  • I will travel outside of the Northern Virginia/DC Metro area to shoot an event, but it costs a little extra

So here are the packages I offer:

Wedding day essentials, and digital files... $1200

  • Up to 5 hours of wedding day coverage*
  • High resolution digital files of ALL images shot at your event...a lot of photographers limit this to 300...in both TIFF and JPG formats
  • Basic post-processing (editing) on all of your images, and fine-art post processing on up to 250 of your best images
  • Reproduction rights to all images, including a signed print release that allows you to print any images you want, with vendor of your choice
  • Access to a private, password protected online gallery, where friends and family can view and download files, or even directly order prints

*More coverage hour can be added at an hourly rate of $120 per hour

All other events... $120 per hour

If you thought the pricing for my wedding packages was easy to understand, my pricing for everything else is even easier. I charge $120 per hour for all other events, whether it is a group affair, or individual portraiture, with a two hour session minimum. You will receive 40 edited, full-resolution, fine art quality digital photos per hour of your session, and I will put those on the digital media of your choice, as long as it is either a DVD or flash-drive. You can also order individual prints from my website, or I will give you a signed print release that allows you to print any images you want, with vendor of your choice. And of course you will have access to a private, password protected online gallery where you can view, or download your images.
